Police: Man pinned between cars after shooting was innocent bystander

Police swarmed the Sandia Vista Apartments after reports of a shooting Wednesday night.

“I heard the first eight…seven, eight gunshots, and then I heard a wreck like a ‘slam,’ and then I heard one more gunshot,” said Noemi Gonzalez.

She said she was in her apartment when the shooting happened, and told her children to duck for cover.

Albuquerque Police Officer Simon Drobik said a teen in a silver car was shot, then crashed into a parked car.

Police say an innocent man got caught in the middle.

“Very bizarre chain of events,” said Drobik. “Unfortunately there was a male walking by that got pinned in between the parked vehicle and the person that got shot’s vehicle,” said Drobik.

Gonzalez says it was her brother’s SUV that was struck in the parking lot.

“The truck actually came all the way over here…was teeter-tottering right here, and the guy was pinned right here,” she said.

Gonzalez said she ran to get a car jack to raise the car off the man, but it didn’t work.

“He broke his legs and significant damage to himself,” said Drobik.

Gonzalez said the man pinned between the cars was returning to his apartment from the 7-Eleven.

“He’s a really friendly guy, and like I said, his wife’s going through cancer and fighting it, and he gets on the bus every day to go see her,” she said.

Gonzalez also says the teen who was shot is a role model at the apartment complex to younger kids.

“He’s a really good kid, and that’s what’s shocking to me too. I don’t understand why somebody would want to do this to him,” she said.

So far, no one has been arrested. As for a motive, police are still trying to figure that out.

“We’re not sure if it was a dispute, gang related, drug related,” said Drobik.

Police say the teenager who was shot is in critical condition. As for the man pinned between the cars, they say he is expected to survive.

Police say they are looking through surveillance video from around the area. They’re also asking people to come forward if they know or witnessed what happened.
