Police investigate homicide in NW Albuquerque park

News

Police are investigating a homicide at a northwest Albuquerque park.

The man was killed Monday at Coronado Park near Fourth Street and I-40, right behind a fire station.

Police say two homeless men got into a fight, and one of them killed the other.

The suspect has been identified as Bernest Benjamin, who police say admitted to striking the victim with a stick.

Police say Benjamin has been booked into MDC on an open count of murder.

Monday’s murder is the 27th in Albuquerque since January.

The Albuquerque Police Department says it’s up to the public to make a change.

“The number of detectives is not going to change what people do out here in the field so that’s on the public to police themselves,” Officer Simon Drobik said.

The area around that park has a history of violence and is known for having a large homeless population.
