Police: Driver dies after running red light on Central and Yucca

News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Police are investigating a deadly crash involving an Albuquerque Rapid Transit bus station.

It happened Wednesday during the morning commute and had Central blocked at Yucca Drive NW all morning until around noon.

Police say a silver car ended up on its side against an ART station just after 7 a.m. Police say the man in that car died.

“Obviously this is very tragic what happened but based on what the witnesses are telling us, that individual ran the red light going east on Central,” said APD Officer Simon Drobik.

That driver then hit a red car, police said. The people in that car, a man and a woman weren’t seriously hurt.

Witnesses say the driver that caused all of this may have also been in the bus lane — something that is not allowed.

Sophia Yazzie, who lives right up the street said the area has been confusing since the ART lanes went in. She said her husband saw the crash happen while on his way to work.

“He was shaken up and he said that he saw the people in the red car looking into the white car in disbelief like they were kind of in shock,” said Yazzie.

Central was blocked off all morning from 53rd to 59th streets in both directions.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from a nearby business that should show the crash.
