Police say James Carter was preying on women and teens. They say his last victim was a 14-year-old girl walking home from school.
Police say Carter had a pattern. All three alleged victims were in the same area, alone, and similar in size.
They say they’re glad he’s off the streets before he could strike again.
Albuquerque Police say Thursday morning’s SWAT call at an apartment complex off Pennsylvania and Indian School stemmed from a week’s long investigation involving 25-year-old James Carter.
“Based on stemming charges, pending, we know that he’s very violent,” Albuquerque Police Officer Simon Drobik said. “In the last 48 hours it got pretty intense.”
Thursday, the principal of Eisenhower Middle School sent parents a letter. It reads, “Yesterday, one of our students was walking home when a stranger attempted to pull her inside his car.”
It has parents in shock.
According to APD, the teen was attacked from behind and blacked out.
“It scares me, that my child or anybody else’s child could be abducted,” parent Monique Foley said.
Drivers told police Carter had the girl in a “choke hold,” dragging her back to his car. They stepped in and Carter took off, but not before they wrote down his license plate.
Police say this wasn’t the first time they tied Carter to two more attempted kidnappings within the last week.
APD says it all started last Friday when a 17-year-old says a man in a Kia Soul pulled up behind her after her jog in the Foothills.
She told police he attacked and groped her, but he took off when she put up a fight.
A few days later, a 52-year-old woman reported she had been attacked while she was out for a run along Tramway near Copper.
She told police she maced the man and he got away.
It wasn’t until Thursday morning where police traced Carter back to his home thanks to the witness who had snapped a photo of his license plate.
The alleged victims all had similar descriptions of their attacker and vehicle.
KRQE News 13 asked police why they didn’t put out any warnings earlier after the first two incidents. They said they didn’t want to jeopardize the investigation.
According to court records, it doesn’t appear Carter has a criminal history. He’s now charged with kidnapping and child abuse.
