Police arrest dad shot by 3-year old son

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Albuquerque mom and dad who made national headlines for being shot by their 3-year old are now facing criminal charges.

APD arrested Justin Reynolds Thursday afternoon saying Reynolds put his son in danger by letting him near the gun he used to shoot his dad.

Reynolds and the boy’s mother Monique Villescas are now both facing a “child abuse without a great bodily harm” charge.

As Reynolds was being walked to jail Thursday, News 13 asked him how his son got the gun. Reynolds only shook his head and didn’t answer the question. However, a criminal complaint lays out exactly what happened.

Last Saturday, Reynolds and Villescas were inside a motel room at the “America’s Best Value Inn” on Menaul near University and the “Big I.” According to the complaint, police say the boy’s mom had a .45-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun inside of her purse which was sitting on top of a 3-foot tall mini-fridge.

APD says the boy’s mom had just bought the gun earlier in the day and police say Reynolds was with her when they made the purchase.

According to the criminal complaint, police say the 3-year old boy grabbed the gun out of his mom’s purse and shot his dad in the butt. That bullet went through Reynold’s body, out his thigh and into the mom’s arm.

Villescas is eight-months pregnant. The shooting also happened with the boy’s 2-year old sister in the same room. Reynolds and Villescas were taken to the hospital, treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.

In the complaint, and APD officers wrote, “Justin (Reynolds) knew the firearm was inside Monique’s purse and that all of them were living together in a single room motel.”

While he would not answer any questions News 13 asked today, Reynolds did make a statement to our camera.

“Is there anything that you’d like to say?” asked News 13 reporter Gabrielle Burkhart.

“That I love my family,” replied Reynolds.

Police have also charged Villescas with child abuse, however, she has not been taken into custody yet. APD says they’re waiting for Villescas to turn herself in.

APD says the Feds could also get involved with gun charges in this case. That’s because Reynolds is a convicted felon and not allowed to be around guns.
