PNM is working on its goal of being completely carbon-free by 2040.

PNM says they’re the nation’s first investor-owned utility to set a goal of being 100% emissions-free by that deadline.

Public Service Co. of New Mexico made the announcement Monday. The goal coincides with the state’s recently passed Energy Transition Act which requires New Mexico’s utilities to be completely carbon-free by 2045.

Meanwhile, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican, a Santa Fe based clean energy advocacy group is moving forward with their recently filed petition with the state. They are asking for a formal investigation into PNM’s plans to renew it’s expiring leases at an Arizona nuclear plant.

The petition announcement was made the same day that PNM announced their plans to be completely emission free by 2020.
