Petition filed to allow independents to vote in NM primary elections

News

There’s a new push to allow New Mexicans registered as independents to vote in the next primary election.

Advocates filed a petition with State Supreme Court, asking it to block funding for the state’s closed primary election system.

That system only allows those registered as Democrat or Republican to cast a ballot in the primary.

They say the current system violates the constitution by excluding 22 percent of registered state voters who decline to register as a Democrat or Republican.

Advocates for the current system it helps voters make informed choices.
