The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a claim by a couple that their child is being lured by a registered sex offender. The parents said they noticed something concerning when they started looking into their neighbor’s past.
Sarah Torres and Cameron Sanchez live in Tijeras with their two kids. They said their neighbors, Michael and Joy Gilpin, used to invite their family over to their property.
“They were trying to turn their place into a camp,” said Torres. “He called himself red wolf with blue eyes and so it was supposed to be a wolf camp.”
The couple said they became suspicious when their 9-year-old daughter told them Joy Gilpin told her to keep a secret about gifts she gave her.
“She had a gold necklace that Joy had given her and she was like, ‘I don’t know why Joy was telling me to keep this a secret? It’s not a big deal, it’s just a gift,'” said Sanchez.
So they started looking into their neighbors. Court records show Michael Gilpin pled guilty to 100 counts of possessing child porn and is a registered sex offender. Online records show Joy Gilpin was accused of child exploitation but the charges were dropped because of an uncooperative witness.
“Once we realized what was really going on, it all just kind of fell together,” said Torres. “It was like a sick feeling in my stomach.”
In a probation violation report for Michael Gilpin, an officer wrote Gilpin’s wife is complicit in his deviant behavior.
The couple told KRQE News 13 they believe she is the one trying to lure kids, knowing Michael would be in trouble if he were caught anywhere near them.
“When [my daughter] got off the [school] bus and [Joy Gilpin] told my daughter that she had left something at their house and that she has to go get it, and that she doesn’t have to tell her parents, that’s probably one of the biggest red flags right there,” said Torres.
Sanchez and Torres have now filed a police report with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the case. But Sanchez has gone a step further notifying their neighbors.
“The only thing I could think of was put this out on the neighborhood watch app, Nextdoor,” said Sanchez.
The post on Nextdoor has gotten a lot of attention, with many other neighbors responding about their own interactions with the couple.
Some of those neighbors reported that Joy Gilpin volunteered at a senior center in the area. Representatives said she is not welcome back. Online court records also show that Michael Gilpin was convicted of other child porn charges out of Louisiana. No charges have been filed in this case so far.
