Pair accused in deadly crash that killed retired officer face federal charges

The pair accused of killing a retired officer while running from police is now facing federal charges. 

Daniel Lowell and Trista Schlaefli were arraigned Tuesday in federal court on carjacking and gun charges resulting in a death. 

Investigators say in November, the two were in a stolen car and fled from officers at a Border Patrol checkpoint. 

Officers say when they got to Las Cruces, they crashed into retired Las Cruces Officer J.R. Stewart, killing him. 

If convicted, they face up to life in prison.
