Overnight fire explosion in southeast Albuquerque apartment still under investigation

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M (KRQE) – Officials are investigating a gas explosion at apartments near Avenida Cesar Chavez and I-25 that happened around midnight Wednesday.

Firefighters arrived at 701 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE at 11:56 p.m. and found an explosion occurred in one of the apartments with no fire present.

No occupants were in the apartment when the firefighters arrived.

Later, a 911 call came in reporting a burned patient was found in a bush a couple of blocks away from the apartment. AFD paramedics arrived and found a conscious male in his forties with burns to part of his body.

According to AFD he was transported to UNM Hospital for treatment.

He is currently in critical condition.

The explosion was caused by gas and is still under investigation.
