It’s hard to race solar-powered cars in this kind of weather, but that’s why these smart kids had a backup plan. Friday, more than 200 students from eight tribal schools from across the state put their skills to the test at the 25th annual PNM Solar Car Races.
The race kicked off at Explora where the top 24 cars raced to the finals. Due to the weather, the cars were not able to race outdoors but instead were given batteries to compete.
“It’s teaching them to not only build a first sustainable source of energy, but also what you can do as a backup plan,” a PNM spokesperson said.
Top cars from each school were judged on aesthetic, design and speed.
