Otero County Commissioners are speaking out against the idea of making White Sands National Monument a National Park.
The commission sent a letter to Sen. Martin Heinrich, who wants the change in order to boost visitor numbers.
The letter argues the re-designation is unnecessary because White Sands is already the most visited National Monument in the state.
The commissioners say other improvements, like establishing campsites, would be better for attracting more visitors.
The letter also express concern the change might limit operations that are profitable to the state, like film productions.
