A canoe made from concrete may sound impossible, but not for a team of local engineering students.

Students on New Mexico State University’s civil engineering team won first place in this month’s Regional Concrete Canoe Competition.

They’ll now move on to the national competition in San Diego, where they’ll also race their canoe against other schools.

Winners of the national competition can earn up to $5,000 in scholarships.
