NMDOT raising speed limit along stretch of Highway 285

News

The New Mexico Department of Transportation is upping the speed limit on a busy southern New Mexico highway.

The limit is changing to 75 mph along the roughly 100 mile stretch of Highway 285 between Roswell and Vaughn.

DOT officials say the increase is partly based on something called the “85th Percentile Rule,” which states a reasonable speed limit is one that 85 percent of drivers are already following.

They also considered factors like crash data and roadway configurations.
