Soccer team New Mexico United has issued an official statement following the death of the father of one of the team’s players. Defender Justin Schmidt lost his father, Jonathan David Schmidt, in a car crash that happened last Saturday.
Schmidt’s mother was also involved in the crash and remains in the hospital. The team’s head coach Troy Lesesne and owner and CEO Peter Trevisani released statements.
“We are shaken and saddened by the news of Jonathan Schmidt’s accident and passing. Our team and our entire community stand with Justin and his family. We are praying for his mother, Jeaneece Schmidt, and will do everything we can to support her full recovery,” Trevisani said in a statement.
Lesesne also echoed support for the player’s family stating the soccer community must band together during this time of need. United players will honor the Schmidt family Sunday during their Cinco de Mayo match.
Players will wear armbands to show their support. The team also asks the public to give the Schmidt family privacy at this time.
