Trial for man accused in killing spree put on hold

News Briefs

The trial for the man accused of a killing spree in northern New Mexico has been put on hold for now.

Damian Herrera is accused of killing his mother, stepfather, and brother in La Madera, then killing a man he came across near Taos, and another near Abiquiu.

His trial was scheduled to start Monday, but Judge Jeff McElroy ordered a mental evaluation to determine if Herrera is competent to stand trial. The court says Herrera has been displaying odd behaviors like licking jail cell walls.
