Smokey Bear Memorial honors fallen wildland firefighters

News Briefs

The state’s first-ever fallen wildland firefighters memorial was unveiled at the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan. The project took more than a year of effort and fundraising and recognizes 33 New Mexico firefighters who perished protecting homes and land from wildfires.

The memorial was funded by a series of donors and grants from the Lincoln County Commission. In the future, New Mexico-based wildland firefighters who fall in fires out of state will be eligible for inclusion on the memorial, as will out of state firefighters that perish in New Mexico.
