Santa Fe school board votes against adding armed security guards

News Briefs

Santa Fe School Board members have rejected the board president’s proposal to hire armed school guards.

Board President Steven Carrillo proposed adding the armed officers to the district’s two high schools starting this year.

At Tuesday night’s board meeting, members voted against holding a special study session on the issue.

One board member was concerned hiring armed officers only for the high school is unfair to elementary and middle school students.

Several board members, however, expressed interest in counselors for students.
