Redistricting bill would take task away from lawmakers

News Briefs

A bipartisan bill in the state legislature would take drawing New Mexico’s political boundaries out of the hands of state lawmakers.

Senate Bill 416 is sponsored by Democratic Senator Bill Tallman and Republican Senator Mark Moores. It would give the legislative council service the power to draw districts and if they could not agree it would go to the state Supreme Court to decide.

Those for the bill say it would combat gerrymandering or drawing lines for political gain.
