People around Santa Fe might see smoke from a pair of prescribed burns underway east of town.

Fire officials say they’re taking advantage of moisture and wind levels to thin more than 500 acres in the National Forest.

As KRQE News 13 has reported, environmental groups have tried to stop forest thinning in that region, saying it hurts recreation.

Officials say the burns are vital for maintaining the health of the Santa Fe Watershed, which provides 40 percent of Santa Fe’s water.
