Portales City Council approves rec center plans

The Portales City Council has approved a controversial plan to turn the city’s recreation center into an entertainment center.

According to the Eastern New Mexico News, the council voted unanimously to begin negotiations on the project.

City councilors are looking to convert the center into a bowling alley or skating rink.

The city confirmed it has already received one proposal for the new venue, but are not saying which company submitted it or what their specific plans are.

Residents have expressed concerns about what will become of after-school and other programs, the council says they will be relocated.
