Legislation changes Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day

News Briefs

Every October, New Mexico will honor the contributions of Native Americans rather than Columbus.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the legislation into law Tuesday that strikes Columbus Day from a list of state holidays and replaces it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It will be celebrated on the second Monday in October.

At least five other states have followed suit, however, the day is still recognized as a federal holiday.
