A southern New Mexico organization wants to overturn new laws that cleared the legislature this year. The Eddy County Patriot Group says it’s seeking petitions for veto referendums on laws aimed to protect wildlife, creating a branch university in Mexico, and renaming Columbus Day.

If approved, the petitions would need more than 70,000 signatures to send the issues directly to voters. The secretary of state already rejected attempts to throw out a new gun control law by referendum, but she argues it’s an issue of public safety and therefore doesn’t qualify.
