A former New Mexico doctor has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for illegally prescribing opioids leading to patients’ deaths.
Prosecutors say Pawankumar Jain operated a high volume pain management practice in Las Cruces and frequently prescribed opioids without a proper examination or patient history. Four patients died as a result of the pain meds he prescribed.
Jain was sentenced to the max allowed under his plea agreement. Prosecutors say his case sends a message that they are working hard to tackle the opioid crisis and those who contribute to it.
