Durango man pardoned 50 years after alleged crime

News Briefs

A Durango man has been pardoned five decades after his alleged crime.

According to the Durango Herald, 73-year-old James Benavidez was arrested for stealing alcohol from Wagon Wheel Liquors when he was just 19 years old.

Benavidez says he drank the liquor with his friend, but didn’t know it was stolen.

He was wrapped up in the allegations anyway and served nine months for the crime.

Benavidez was pardoned by Colorado Governor Hickenlooper in March, giving him a clean slate for the first time in 54 years.
