Department of Education offers conversion of Teach Grant loan debt

News Briefs

Local educators will now have the chance to clear up some debt, thanks to investigation by the Attorney General.

The Teach Grant Program provides up to $4,000 a year to educators who intend to teach in high-poverty areas, but last spring those grants started being converted into loans by the Department of Education without notice.

The conversion requires recipients to repay the whole amount.

The Attorney General says starting January 2019, teachers can now apply to have that conversion reversed.
