Bloomfield residents oppose merging police, sheriff’s office

News Briefs

Bloomfield residents are speaking out against the idea to merge the police and sheriff’s departments.

Last week, Bloomfield’s mayor announced it as an idea to deal with budget troubles and an officer shortage.

However, it’s not sitting well with some residents, with several expressing opposition at Monday’s city council meeting.

The Farmington Daily Times reports, a major concern was the idea of giving up local decision-making power.

City Councilor Matt Pennington said he believes no one could replace Bloomfield’s capable first responders, but ultimately the city has to make sure those people get paid.

Councilors say at this point, they’re just gathering information.
