Bills aiming to restrict late-term abortions fail in committee

News Briefs

A legislative committee has blocked two anti-abortion bills.

The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee voted to stop a bill allowing hospitals and doctors to opt out of performing an abortion for moral or religious reasons.

It also voted against a bill restricting late-term abortions and requiring minors to receive parental consent for the procedure.

Advocates of the bill argue late-term abortions endanger the mother and the fetus. Opponents say the final decision belongs to the woman.

The bills’ sponsors say they will bring the bills back again next year.
