APD planning to expand Shield Unit program

News Briefs

The Albuquerque Police Department is expanding a program designed to help prepare criminal cases for court.

The department launched its Shield Unit in 2017, using paralegals to gather evidence and records. Under the new city budget, the unit will now include 12 fully funded positions.

APD says the Shield Unit has uncovered information on nearly 2,800 cases so far this year, and allows officers to spend more time out on patrol.
