New visitor center opens at Kirtland Air Force base

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Kirtland Air Force Base debuted its new visitor’s center Friday.

The ribbon cutting ceremony wrapped up a series of 75th anniversary celebrations.

The center, located at the Truman Gate, was renamed “The Colonel Roy C. Kirtland Heritage Visitors Center” after a pioneer in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Organizers say the base takes a lot of pride in recognizing the history.

“Our airman understand the notion that history makes you smarter, but heritage makes you prouder,” Eric H. Froelich, U.S. Air Force.

Historical images and pieces of artwork cover the walls inside showing the 75 year span, since it was renamed in Kirtland’s honor in 1942.
