A dangerous stretch of southeastern New Mexico highway has been designated as a safety corridor.

Drivers along Highway 285 from Loving down to the Texas state line, may notice new signs warning them to take extra caution.

The Department of Transportation says there will be increased law enforcement presence and drivers speeding or breaking other traffic laws will face double the fines.

This comes following a string of deadly crashes.

Residents have been petitioning the county to do something before someone else is killed.
