The opening of the new restaurant at the top of the Sandia Peak Tramway has been delayed after developers encountered the challenges of building at 10,000 plus feet.
These days, things look a little different at the top of Albuquerque’s top attraction.
A crater-looking site greets visitors. It’s all that remains of the ’60s-era restaurant High Finance after it came down in late 2016.
“Looking at renovating that structure, [it] had too many issues,” Benny Abruzzo said.
Abruzzo is the Vice President of the Sandia Peak Tramway, but on Friday when KRQE News 13 visited the peak, he doubled as “snow-remover.”
Manning an excavator, Abruzzo pushed away what little snow the peak got this year. It was enough to delay work.
“We had actually hoped we might start this winter because it was such a mild winter. We got up here in late January and thought about starting then, and as you saw, it finally snowed,” he said.
Last year, the project was delayed by the extensive demo work of the old building, along with meeting the $7 million budget and getting approvals from Bernalillo County.
The new eatery was supposed to open this year. Now, Abruzzo says, it’ll be spring of 2019.
Still, he believes it will be worth the wait.
This time around, the restaurant will have views on both sides, rather than just to the west looking at Albuquerque. The Albuquerque views will be for a more fine dining experience, with a causal dining and bar atmosphere on the ski area and east side.
“We hope to surprise people with how good the food is and how warm and wonderful the environment is,” he said. “When we’re done with this, this will be a place that’s talked about for many, many years to come,” he said.
