New program encourages WIC recipients to eat more fruits, veggies

The New Mexico Department of Health is testing out a new program designed to get WIC recipients to eat more fresh fruits and veggies.

WIC is for women, infants and children. As part of a new program, cashiers can tell a customer the remaining balance on their WIC card after their purchase is totaled.

Fruits and vegetables are conveniently placed at the cash registers to allow WIC participants to then add them to their order.

The USDA reports about 20 percent of funds for purchasing fruits and vegetables go unused each year.
