ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s the 30th anniversary of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and they have a lot more to cheer for than just turning 30.
“It’s an exciting time for us. It’s a huge milestone,” said Margie Marino, the museum’s executive director.
The museum announced it’s now affiliated with the Smithsonian, a title that only one other museum in Albuquerque has.
That affiliation means part of the Smithsonian’s national collection will be coming here.
“Only two percent of their millions and millions of objects are on display and they wanted to get these out to the community,” said Marino
“Not everybody can come to the Smithsonian and Washington D.C. to see things, so if you can’t come to us, it’s our objective to bring the resources and come to you,” said Aaron Glavas, Smithsonian outreach manager
Because of the partnership the Natural History Museum now has the post diamond tiara on display. It has nearly 1,200 rose cut diamonds and was made in 1840.
“It’s a beautiful thing and everyone should come and see it. It’ll be New Mexico’s Hope Diamond the next 6 to 8 months,” said Marino
The first of many national treasures that will call New Mexico home for a short while.
The museum also celebrated the opening of their STEM education wing.
