Winter weather affects driving conditions

New Mexico

The winter weather is already affecting traffic.

Monday morning, it closed parts of NM-528 in Rio Rancho. It has since reopened but more icy conditions are expected.

The road to Sandia Crest is so treacherous, it is off limits.

NM-152 between Truth or Consequences and Silver City remains closed.

North and southbound lanes on SR-219 are closed. Drivers can still get to Vaughan by going to Santa Rosa and taking US54.

State Police say the weather may affect some people’s New Year’s Eve plans.

“We want you to know you can expect delays, road closures. You could be stranded out there on the roadway for quite a while. If there’s a big wreck, you’re gonna be stuck so that’s why we’re recommending that everyone stay home,” says Ofc. Ray Wilson.

In Chaves County, snowy conditions and icy roads are also causing trouble for drivers. They are still icy from the last storm and with more snow heading that way, more problems are expected.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Mescalero due to the heavy snow affecting homes.

The Mescalero Community Center is located 107 Sunloop Drive.
