You can call him the thief with a green thumb. A Rio Rancho homeowner woke up to find someone had stolen plants from his front yard and caught it all on video.
“Got up to come out to get the newspaper and noticed there were some shrubs missing and messed with,” says Steve Bible.
Bible has been living in his Rio Rancho home for close to five years. When he woke up on Friday morning, his front yard looked a little off. An agave plant had been damaged and someone had removed an entire yucca.
“Pulled up on my camera and caught the guy with his truck trying to take my plants,” he says.
Bible says the man drove up to his property in a white truck around 2:30 a.m. When the man got out of his truck, he went straight to the agave plant.
“Was unsuccessful in getting that one out, it’s pretty well rooted. Looked at it. Kicked it,” he says. “Went over to the yucca and just dug it up, threw it in the back of his truck, and took off,” he continued.
Bible says he doesn’t recognize the man but says the truck he was driving was a marked work vehicle.
“The cameras picked up the markings and I was able to enhance those markings. I was able to uncover a company, a local company,” he says.
The man only spent about two minutes in Bible’s front yard. Bible says this is the strangest thing he’s ever seen.
“These are desert plants. You can go out in the mesa and dig them up, and no one’s even going to notice. Why do you mess with something I’ve worked hard for and put in a lot of effort to look nice?” Bible said.
Even though it was a minor crime, Bible believes desperation was the reason for the plant theft.
“Get a life. I mean come on,” he says.
Bible has filed a police report with Rio Rancho Police and says officers are still investigating the case.
