A burglar broke into a business and made himself right at home. He was so comfortable, he fell asleep on the couch, where the owners found him.
“It’s just sad, disturbing and upsetting, and I was pretty angry but I kept my cool,” said MC Electric owner Melvin Cordova.
When Melvin and his son, Christopher, opened their doors at their electric company in Espanola Tuesday morning, they knew something was off.
“When we got here, we came in the door and the radio was full blast and the shower was going,” said Christopher.
Their pictures and supplies were thrown all over the floor.
“All of this was soaking wet from all the water that was coming out of the shower,” said Christopher, showing water damage.
Their back window shattered too, but around the corner in Melvin’s office, they found another surprise.
“So I opened it and there was this guy there asleep on the couch there, so it freaked me out,” said Melvin.
Melvin then quietly called police, grabbed a pipe and gave the suspected burglar, Juan Lovato, a rude awakening.
“Came in and said, ‘Hey wake up! If you move, I’m gonna whack you,'” recalled Christopher.
Then, the father and son pulled out a phone.
Melvin: “Tell me your friends names.”
Lovato: “Mark and Melvin Martinez.”
Melvin: “And your name?”
Lovato: “Juan Lovato.”
Melvin: “From where?”
Lovato: “I’m from Hernandez, they’re from (inaudible).”
Police arrived soon after Melvin began his questioning. Lovato told them he thought he was in a hospital and also claims that he was with two buddies, but they weren’t there when he woke up.
Melvin hopes his confrontation with Lovato is a wake-up call.
“Well, what I want to do is expose all these people that are doing this stuff, you know, so everyone in the community can see who they are and to keep watch for them,” said Melvin.
Police charged Lovato with damaging property and burglary. He did leave behind his discharge paperwork from the hospital. Police said a computer is missing and they’re investigating if two others were involved.
