ESPAÑOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – A suspect has died following an officer-involved shooting with the Española Police Department on Tuesday, June 8. The incident happened on North Riverside Drive and Calle Ranchitos.

New Mexico State Police is investigating and reports that all officers are okay and uninjured. NMSP confirmed that the suspect was taken to the hospital where they later died.

Police say around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a welfare check in the parking lot of Ranchitos Park. They say 38-year-old Luis Leyba was in the driver’s seat of a vehicle and a woman was in the passenger seat when Leyba put the car in reverse and started to drag an officer.

Police say Leyba ignored the officer’s commands to stop. Police shot Leyba, hitting him at least once. He was taken to the hospital where he died. His female passenger was treated for minor injuries and the officer is okay.

NMSP says the identification of the officers involved will not be released until interviews are complete.
