The suspect shot and wounded by New Mexico State Police during a hostage situation was wanted in Louisiana for kidnapping his family.
James Kirkland is accused of blowing through a Border Patrol checkpoint in Dona Ana County on Thursday with his wife and 7-year-old son in the car.
When he stopped near Hatch, New Mexico, his wife fled. That’s when police say he barricaded himself inside the vehicle and threatened to kill himself and the boy.
An NMSP officer opened fire, hitting Kirkland. No one else was hurt. Detectives in Livingston Parish, Louisiana were trying to find Kirkland following a tip he had kidnapped his wife.
Kirkland is set to be booked as soon as he’s released from the hospital.
