Police are investigating a home invasion in an upscale New Mexico neighborhood that left the suspect dead and a woman injured.

Ruidoso Police say an intruder broke into a home on Country Club Drive just before 6:30 Thursday morning.

“The scene is secure. There is no public safety threat,” said Kerry Gladden, a spokesperson for the Village of Ruidoso.

Police have not said how the deadly shooting unfolded inside the home. However, they do say the intruder was shot and killed. He hasn’t been identified yet.

Officials also confirm a woman who lives in the home with her husband was shot. She was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Her husband was not harmed.

The neighborhood is full of upscale homes surrounding a golf course, and people who live there say they usually don’t deal with much crime.

“I was surprised that there had been a shooting, but this country has gone crazy it seems like,” said Larry Fuqua, who lives nearby.

KRQE News 13 is still trying to get answers from police, including if the intruder was armed.

State Police have been called in to help investigate.
