State working to fight surge in scams targeting New Mexico seniors

New Mexico

The state is working to protect elderly New Mexicans from scams.

There has been a surge in Medicaid and Medicare scams, most recently with companies peddling unnecessary orthopedic braces to seniors.

Experts say red flags can be pressure from providers to get items you don’t think you need.

“In this day and age, we know that our senior population is more vulnerable. They did not grow up with the technology that some of the rest of us had, so you need to be very vigilant when you’re online, be very cautious with your social security number,” Dr. Beau Hightower said.
