State leaders want to make sure New Mexicans are being properly paid for their work. Thursday, they announced a new initiative to ensure employers follow minimum wage and labor laws.
Workforce Solutions Secretary Bill McCamley says he believes most employers want to do the right thing, so part of the initiative involves education and outreach, especially when laws change. However, McCamley says another measure will be to investigate and prosecute employers who are not acting in good faith.
“We do have some bad actors in the state who are not paying their employees, even after being reminded many times that they’re breaking the law,” McCamley said.
Right now, Workforce Solutions is dealing with more than 1,000 cases of workers claiming they weren’t paid correctly.
