Seven New Mexico counties are waiting to see if they will get a day in court against a prescription drug manufacturer.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican Cibola, Valencia, Catron, Sierra, Curry, Lincoln and Socorro counties have railed together against Purdue Pharma, the maker of prescription painkiller Oxycontin.
The state is behind another suit, claiming the drug company sparked a nationwide opioid abuse epidemic by aggressively marketing the drug.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the lawsuits filed last month are the latest in roughly 2,000 cases that have been brought nationwide by states, cities and counties against opioid makers.
Previous states that issued lawsuits have settled, winning millions.
