It’s back to the drawing board for State House Republicans. New Mexico’s Secretary of State has rejected their shot, aimed at repealing a new gun control law.

Republican lawmakers have been trying to send the recently signed Senate Bill 8 to voters. Senate Bill 8 is a law that requires background checks on private gun sales.

Secretary Maggie Toulouse Oliver rejected the petition two other times, saying the repeal of a public safety law cannot legally be put to a public vote.
