Santa Feans help beloved homeless musician after guitar is stolen

New Mexico

What few things he owned were ripped from him, including his only source of income. But thanks to the Santa Fe community, a beloved homeless musician can continue making the world a more cheerful place.

Downtown Santa Fe is known for its sights and sounds, with some of those sweet notes coming from homeless street musician Kavin — that’s what he goes by. Just Kavin.

Jen Stillions says it was his distinct voice that caught her attention.

“Just walking around the plaza with my friend and I love the street music and he was playing and we stopped to chat with him,” Jen says.

Since last October, Kavin, Jen and her friend Tim Schwartz have been friends. Tim says along with his voice, Kavin’s signs catch people’s attention.

“He’s got some real catchphrases that are really good,” Tim says.

This week he told them some devastating news. The few possessions he owned, including his guitar, were stolen.

“It’s how he earns money to eat and survive out here so it’s a really big deal,” Jen says.

That prompted his friends to take action.

“I just decided to throw a post up on the Santa Fe bulletin board and see if anyone might have an old guitar lying around that they want to get rid of,” Jen says.

Jen says within an hour she received two offers.

“I won’t say I was surprised. I was really touched. It was magical,” she says.

By Thursday, he was back to doing what he loves and what others also cherish.

“I’m back in the game,” Kavin says.

Jen and Tim say when the community steps up, lives change for the better.

“When the power of people come together beautiful things happen,” Tim says.

Jen and Tim are also working on a photo project to help Kavin raise money to replace the clothes that were stolen and help him fulfill his dream of living in a camper van.
