Leaders are speaking out in support of a proposed pay increase for Santa Fe police officers. The union president for Santa Fe Police officers, Tony Trujillo, tells the Albuquerque Journal, he’s happy with the proposal.

Tuesday, Trujillo said the proposed increase couldn’t be disclosed since negotiations aren’t yet finalized, however, he also says it’s a step in the right direction to stop officers from leaving to other departments. The city currently has 23 vacancies in the department.

Santa Fe police starting pay is $19.11 but in Albuquerque, starting pay is $29. Negotiations are set to be complete sometime this month.
