Fourteen new Santa Fe Police officers will soon patrol the streets.

This comes as the department continues to face an officer shortage.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports three of the new hires are from other police departments, the rest are new cadets.

The shortage is reportedly impacting call times.

Police documents show response times for all categories of calls have gone up.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that officers are leaving for other departments with higher pay.

Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber recently announced signing bonuses promising to pay $1,000 to new cadets and $2,000 to lateral officers.

The department now has 20 vacancies.
