Santa Fe County’s fire chief is moving on to something new after 12 years overseeing the department. David Sperling confirmed Wednesday that he will join his wife’s employee benefits firm and will be leaving his position.

Sperling, who served 20 years with the city of Santa Fe Fire Department before moving to the county, says he’s proud of helping lay a strong foundation for a new chief to build on.

Sperling told the Albuquerque Journal that the county fire department, including 14 volunteer fire districts, cover a territory spanning over 2,000 miles.
