Santa Fe city councilors are considering a ban on electric scooter rentals, at least until the city has time to weigh the pros and cons.
It comes after scooter-sharing company “Bird” reached out to the city last year. There’s been plenty of talk about the problems in other cities, where scooters have created a nuisance and a safety hazard.
Councilor Carol Romero-Wirth says while scooters might be a good fit for Santa Fe, work needs to be done to evaluate the concerns and gauge community interest.
She introduced proposals to keep scooters off public property and give the city manager a year to explore whether a pilot program would be appropriate.
Last month, KRQE News 13 learned scooter companies are not applying for permits in Albuquerque because they find the city’s rules too restrictive.
