Santa Fe archbishop apologizes to victims following Pa. report

New Mexico

A Santa Fe archbishop is apologizing on behalf of the church after reported abuse by clergy and he’s taking action.

Last week a Pennsylvania grand jury investigation revealed at least 1,000 minors were sexually assaulted by more than 300 clergy members over 70 years.

According to The Santa Fe New Mexican, the report had New Mexico connections, as several of the priests named had served in New Mexico parishes.

Archbishop of Santa Fe John C. Wester says in a statement he is “profoundly sorry for the pain and suffering endured by so many.”

The archbishop also says he directed a victim assistance and safe environment board be established.

He says it will be made up of lay-people trained in the area of sexual abuse and criminal behavior.
